Norway House Cree Nation Facing Unprecedented Erosion #ErosionUnleashed

Norway House Cree Nation has been facing unprecedented erosion along 2-Mile and 8-Mile channels that were constructed by Manitoba Hydro in the 1970s as part of the Lake Winnipeg Regulation Project.

In recent years, erosion along the shore banks of these channels ramped up leading to sever sediment deposition along Playgreen Lake located downstream of 2-Mile Channel. This has major complications for human safety during marine navigation and impacts the health of the lake, fish and animals.

In 2022, the Nation reached out to both the Provincial government and Manitoba Hydro to seek assistance in dealing with this worsening problem and were met with silence and stalling. The Province is only now coming to the table to discuss the Nations concerns. Manitoba Hydro must take accountability for these impacts and develop an engineered solution in real time to prevent further damage to the land and waters.
